Orlando Rios E-Mail: orios@ufl.edu I am currently investigating high temperature equilibrium in the Ti-Al-Nb ternary alloy system for aeronautical turbine blade applications. My focus is on the evaluation of phase equilibria, with the goal of optimizing the high temperature phase diagram in this system. We are interested in the central region of the phase diagram where the γ, σ, and β phase boundaries exist. Our work focuses on temperatures down from the liquidus surfaces and the evolution of the multi-phase equilibrium develops through the invariant reactions. In this complex system, multiple invariant reactions cascade into each other and there are strongly temperature-dependent solubility limits. Therefore, in order to better predict the high temperature equilibrium, an experimental assessment of the relevant regions is necessary. Thus far, we have experimentally shown a ternary eutectic and ternary peritectic reaction. |
