I am working on the Ti-Al-Nb system with the addition of various             β-stabilizing elements for use in jet engines. We will be heat treating the alloys in our vertical clam shell furnace and will perform high-temperature mechanical testing on the Mechanical Testing System. This material should have high strength and toughness as well as good creep resistance at high temperatures. The strengthening of this material will be achieved through the presence of a fine intermetallic phase (σ-phase), which is discontinuous throughout the bulk of the material.
