I am currently working on the hydrogenation of nanocrystalline Al-Mg alloys for vehicular applications. The Al-Mg alloys are prepared in the form of a powder via the electro-deposition technique using an organometallic electrolyte. These alloys are potential candidates for on-board solid state hydrogen storage, as they have high volumetric and gravimetric capacities. For this application, the kinetics of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are very important. Variables that affect the kinetics include catalysts, grain size, recyclability, and the stability of the compounds for various cycles of hydrogenation/dehydrogenation. Different combinations of these parameters are being explored so that the system can be optimized for the required conditions.
